Derby

Derby is perhaps best known for its tidal changes. Low to high tide can be up to 12 metres, the largest in Australia and amongst the biggest in the world.

Low tide last night as the sun was setting

About 2 pm yesterday. Mid tide.

About midday today. High tide. Not too much room under the jetty.

Quite stunning.

We had a wander around town today. We are a bit weary so we decided to give Windjana Gorge/Tunnel Creek a miss. It was going to be 5 hours of driving, quite a bit on rough roads.  After over 8,000 kms, a rest day was called for. We also have to leave some things to see next time!

A visit to the Kimberley School Of The Air. The old equipment on display. Nowadays, it’s all done via Skype. The Education department ensures that all the kids have enough internet bandwidth in the remote areas.  There are plenty of areas out here that have no internet.

A very nice looking golf course here, although I’m not sure about Wednesday and Friday comps!

The Prison Boab Tree. Prisoners (generally Aborigines) and “slaves” or involuntary workers, were locked inside overnight during overland marches to the local jail, or to works as pearlers.

The SS Colac wreck is off the shore of Derby.  I didn’t even know a ship was named Colac

Last night was the coldest in Derby for the year. 7oC. Locals thought it was freezing. A perfect night for sleeping. Today got to 32o. The daily average is 34o all year.

Bye for now.
